SOME / ANY / COMPOUD FORMS

I) Some and compoud forms

    Some significa alguns, algumas, um pouco de, e deve ser usada em orações afirmativas, seguida ou não de substantivo

Exemplos:

Peter has some friends in Boston.

Please give me some water.

- Have you made many mistakes?

- Well, some.

      As formas compostas something (algo, alguma coisa), someone ou somebody(alguém) e somewhere (algum lugar) também são usadas com orações afirmativas, mas não podem ser seguidas de substantivos, embora possam vir acompanhadas de adjetivo.

Exemplos:

I've bought something new for you at the market.

There's someone (somebody) waiting for her outside.

His shoes must be somewhere inthe house, but he can't find them.

NOTA:

      Some e as formas podem ser usadas em orações interrogativas quando uma resposta "sim" é esperada; isso ocorre principalmente quando se trata  de convite ou oferecimento.

Exemplos:

You look extremely worried. Have you had some bad news from your family?

Would you like something to eat?

II) Any and compound forms

    Em orações interrogativas e negativas deve-se normalmente usar any ou as formas compostas anything, anyone (ou anybody) e anywhere, em lugar de some ou composto.

Exemplos:

-Did you buy any clothes this morning?

-No, I didn't have any money with me.

-Is there any orange juice left

-No, sorry. There isn't any.

-Do you have anything to tell me?

-No, I didn't have anything to tell you.

- Can anyone help me with the work?

- There isn't anyone available right now.

NOTA:

    Any e as formas compostas podem ser usadas em orações afirmativas , com o sentido de qualquer (qualquer coisa, qualquer pessoa, qualquer lugar).

Exemplos:

    The symptoms are very clear. Any (qualquer) doctor will tell you how to treat this disease.

     - What can I bring you for lunch?

     - Anything (qualquer coisa) I'm not really hungry.

    Em certas orações a negação não se encontra no verbo, mas em algumas palavras  como: never, without, hardly (quase não, dificilmente), scarcely (mal, quase não) seldom, rarely.

Exemplo:

   I can hardly see anything from here. It's too far away.
